What to do with a matured bond

  1. Check its value in the calculator. It keeps the value it reached at final maturity.
  2. Cash it at your bank or by mail with FS Form 1522. See how to cash savings bonds.
  3. Sort out the tax. If you deferred reporting, the interest was taxable for the year the bond matured. See savings bond taxes.

Electronic bonds in TreasuryDirect are paid automatically when they mature. Paper bonds are not: someone has to cash them.
